Ancient Merv (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

Ancient Merv is one of the oldest and best-preserved oasis cities along the Silk Road in Central Asia, located near the modern city of Mary. The site encompasses several distinct walled cities constructed over two millennia, including Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala, and Sultan Kala, reflecting the rise and fall of various empires. During the 11th and 12th centuries, Merv was a capital of the Great Seljuk Empire and one of the largest cities in the world, serving as a major center of Islamic learning and culture. The most prominent surviving structure is the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar, which features a sophisticated double-shell dome that influenced later Timurid architecture. In 1999, the archaeological site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its exceptional historical importance and well-preserved urban stratigraphy. Despite its destruction by the Mongols in 1221, the site remains a significant monument to the complex history of the region.
