Gonur Depe (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

Gonur Depe is one of the world's most significant Bronze Age archaeological sites, located in the former oasis of the Margiana region in eastern Turkmenistan. The site was discovered in the 1970s by the famous archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi and is considered the capital of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC) culture. Between 2400 and 1600 BC, Gonur Depe was a highly sophisticated urban settlement featuring a monumental palace complex, temples, and complex irrigation systems. Excavations revealed an advanced society engaged in metallurgy, pottery, and extensive long-distance trade, with evidence of links stretching to Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley. Some researchers suggest that Gonur Depe was an early center of Zoroastrianism, pointed to by specific fire and water temples and cultic vessels found on site. The location provides invaluable insights into the development of the first urban civilizations in Central Asia.
