Gonur Depe (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

Gonur Depe is one of the most significant Bronze Age archaeological sites in the world, serving as the capital of the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (BMAC). Located in the historical Margiana oasis in southeastern Turkmenistan, the settlement dates back to 2400-1600 BC and was discovered in the 1970s by Soviet archaeologist Viktor Sarianidi. Excavations revealed a monumental palace, fortified walls, and elaborate temple complexes that point to a highly organized and wealthy urban society. The site is particularly famous for providing early evidence of religious practices related to Proto-Zoroastrianism, including fire and water temples and ceremonial vessels used for the Soma-Haoma ritual. The people of Gonur Depe were skilled in metallurgy, irrigation, and long-distance trade, as evidenced by artifacts linked to Mesopotamia and the Indus Valley civilization. The city's decline is believed to have been caused by the gradual drying up of the Murghab River delta. Today, it remains a crucial site for understanding the origins of early civilization in Central Asia, predating the Silk Road by centuries.
