Mary Cotton Fields (Turkmenistan)

Weather…

The cotton fields of the Mary region are the economic backbone of Turkmenistan's agriculture, often referred to as the home of 'White Gold.' Mary Province, historically situated along the ancient Silk Road, benefits from the fertile alluvial soils of the Murghab delta and intensive irrigation provided by the Karakum Canal. Turkmenistan is ranked among the top ten cotton producers in the world, with Mary contributing a substantial portion to the annual national harvest. The cultivation cycle begins in the spring with sowing and reaches its peak in the autumn months of September and October when the harvesting season commences. The vast white fields define the landscape during this period, bearing witness to the hard work of local farmers. Cotton is not only grown for export but also forms the foundation of the country's growing domestic textile industry, which produces high-quality yarns and fabrics. While modernization has introduced mechanical harvesters, traditional hand-picking is still prevalent in many areas. The fields symbolize the diligence of the population and their deep-rooted connection to the land.
