Dougga Archaeological Site (Tunisia)

Weather…

The archaeological site of Dougga, located in northwestern Tunisia, is widely regarded as the best-preserved Roman small town in North Africa. Known in antiquity as Thugga, the site features over 2,000 years of history, serving as a major Numidian residence before evolving into a Roman colony. Dougga is distinguished by its dramatic setting on a hilltop plateau, which once provided strategic advantages and now provides panoramic views over the Oued Khaled valley. Key monuments include the majestic Capitol dedicated to Jupiter, the ancient theater with 3,500 seats, and the unique 2nd-century BC Libyco-Punic Mausoleum. Unlike many other ancient ruins, Dougga's original urban fabric, featuring paved streets, private villas, and public baths, remains remarkably legible. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 for its exceptional testimony to the synthesis of Numidian, Punic, and Roman cultures.
