Bulla Regia Archaeological Site (Tunisia)

Weather…

Bulla Regia is a unique archaeological site in northwestern Tunisia, renowned for its extraordinary subterranean domestic architecture. To escape the region's intense summer heat, wealthy Roman residents constructed their villas with complete underground stories centered around open-air light shafts. These subterranean rooms are remarkably well-preserved and house some of the finest Roman mosaics remaining in situ (in their original positions). Among the most significant buildings are the House of Amphitrite and the House of the Hunt, which offer vivid insights into the luxurious lifestyle of the local aristocracy. Originally a Numidian city, Bulla Regia came under Roman control after the Third Punic War and flourished as a trade center for grain and olive oil. The site also features a well-preserved theater, public baths, and a Capitol. The combination of Numidian heritage, Roman engineering, and climate adaptation makes Bulla Regia a fascinating example of innovative ancient urban planning.
