Kao (Tonga)

Weather…

Kao is an uninhabited volcanic island in the Ha'apai archipelago and home to the highest peak in the Kingdom of Tonga. The stratovolcano rises from the Pacific with exceptional symmetry, reaching an elevation of 1,030 meters. Geologically, Kao is an extinct or dormant volcano, its slopes covered with dense tropical rainforests and ferns. The summit is frequently shrouded in clouds, contributing to a unique microclimate. The island is separated from the neighboring volcanic island of Tofua by a narrow, 5-kilometer-wide strait. Due to its extremely steep flanks and the absence of natural harbors, climbing Kao is a significant physical challenge and is rarely attempted. Its pristine nature makes Kao an important site for the preservation of Tonga's native flora and fauna, free from human interference.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Kao is located north of Tofua and is accessible only by private boat charter from Pangai in the Ha'apai islands. There is no beach; landings are made directly onto volcanic rocks.
📅
Best season
Plan your visit for the dry season (May-October) for the most stable sea and weather conditions. Heavy swells can make landing on the rocky shore impossible during other months.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The island is a single, steep volcanic cone covered in thick rainforest. The terrain is exceptionally demanding with loose volcanic soil and dense tropical vegetation.
🎒
What to bring
Essential items include professional-grade hiking boots, camping gear, a machete, and several days' worth of food and fresh water, as no water is available on the island.
🅿️
Parking
Parking is available at the harbour in Pangai. Check with your boat operator about where to safely leave your vehicle during your multi-day expedition to Kao.
⚠️
Safety
This uninhabited island is extremely remote. There is a high risk of injury on the steep, pathless slopes; rescue operations are difficult and slow in this part of Tonga.
⏱️
Time needed
A minimum of 2 days is required for a serious attempt at the mountain. This includes boat travel and a very strenuous climb through the dense forest towards the cone's peak.
