Neiafu is the second-largest town in Tonga and the administrative center of the Vavaʻu island group in the north of the kingdom. The town is situated on the shores of the Port of Refuge, a deep, fjord-like natural harbor considered one of the safest and most beautiful in the entire South Pacific. Geographically, Neiafu is characterized by its hilly surroundings and lush tropical vegetation, which contrasts with the deep blue waters of the harbor. Historically, Neiafu was an important base for whaling and the copra trade in the 19th century, which significantly shaped the town's development. Today, the town is a world-renowned center for yachting tourism and serves as the starting point for whale-watching tours, particularly for humpback whales that calve in the protected waters. Social life centers around the main street with its small cafes, shops, and the imposing St. Joseph's Catholic Church. Neiafu maintains a relaxed Polynesian atmosphere while providing modern services for international travelers and the local community.
