Tofua (Tonga)

Weather…

Tofua is a circular volcanic island in the Ha'apai archipelago, known for its impressive central caldera and historical significance. The island has a diameter of about 8 kilometers and hosts a 500-meter-deep crater lake, Lofia, in its center. Geologically, Tofua is an extremely active volcano; regular eruptions and fumarolic activities bear witness to the region's dynamic nature. Historically, Tofua gained worldwide fame as the location where Captain William Bligh and his loyalists first landed following the Mutiny on the Bounty in 1789, before embarking on their epic voyage in an open boat. Today, the island is uninhabited but is occasionally visited by kava growers who take advantage of the fertile volcanic soil. The vegetation is marked by pioneer plants on younger lava flows and dense forest in the older sections of the caldera.
