This inland lake is a defining geographical feature of the island, which is an uplifted coral formation reaching elevations of 50 meters. Historically, Nomuka was a critical stop for early European explorers due to the availability of fresh water near the island's shores. The lake itself is surrounded by dense mangroves and tropical forest, creating a unique microclimate that differs from the surrounding coastal areas.
