'Uiha Island is a site of immense historical and cultural importance located in the southern part of the Haʻapai island group. Spanning approximately 5.36 square kilometers, the island is most famous for housing the Makahokovalu, an ancient royal burial ground featuring monumental stone structures. This site serves as the final resting place for many members of the Tuʻi Haʻapai royal line, reflecting the island's status as a center of power during the Tuʻi Tonga Empire. Captain James Cook visited the island in May 1777, documenting the local customs and the impressive architectural skill of the inhabitants. The island's terrain is relatively flat, with a maximum altitude of 12 meters, and it is covered in dense tropical vegetation and coconut groves. 'Uiha village serves as the primary settlement, where residents continue to practice traditional crafts such as tapa cloth making and mat weaving. The island's isolation has helped preserve its sacred sites and historical landmarks from significant modern development.
