Afagnan lies in southeastern Togo, close to the Mono River that forms the natural border with Benin, and belongs to Bas-Mono Prefecture within the Maritime Region. The town is best known for the 'Hôpital Saint-Jean de Dieu', founded in the 1960s by the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God and today considered one of the finest hospitals in all of West Africa. Patients from Togo, Benin, Ghana, Nigeria and even further afield travel to Afagnan for surgery and specialised treatment. The hospital also runs a nursing school and is one of the area's most important employers. Economically the region has traditionally been shaped by rice cultivation in the Mono floodplains; in recent years tomatoes and vegetables for export have also been produced. The majority-Ouatchi population maintains a rich blend of Christian and Voodoo traditions. An old suspension bridge leads across the river into Benin.
