Mono River Hippo Zone (Benin)

Weather…

The hippo zone along the Mono River forms a natural boundary between Benin and Togo and serves as a vital refuge for the common hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) in West Africa. This stretch of the river is part of the transboundary Mono Delta Biosphere Reserve, officially recognized by UNESCO. The hippos live here in small pods, spending most of the day submerged in water to protect their sensitive skin from the sun, while emerging at night to graze on the riverbanks. The ecosystem is defined by dense gallery forests, marshes, and small islands that provide necessary cover for the animals. Coexistence with local communities, who rely on the river for fishing and domestic needs, is a central focus of the area's management. Conservation efforts aim to minimize human-wildlife conflicts and prevent the destruction of riparian habitats by agricultural expansion. The region also supports crocodiles and a wealth of waterfowl. Ecotourism initiatives offer visitors the chance to observe hippos respectfully by boat while providing economic support to local villagers.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The dry season from December to April is again the best time, as hippos gather in the remaining deep sections of the Mono River. In the rainy season (May-November) the river is heavily swollen and animals are dispersed over a larger area.
🌅
Best time of day
In the early morning between 6 and 9 a.m., hippos are often still visible in the water before retreating into deeper mud. Late afternoon around 4 p.m. they begin to become active and surface more frequently.
📜
Etiquette
Never approach hippos on land or by canoe - always stay in a motorized boat with an experienced guide. Do not throw objects into the water and avoid loud noises that could startle the animals.
🎒
What to bring
Binoculars and a camera with telephoto lens are recommended to photograph hippos from a distance without approaching. Also bring plenty of water and a hat, as it can get very hot on the river.
🧭
Getting there
The protected zone is in southern Benin near the Togo border; the starting point is often the town of Grand‑Popo. From there, boat trips on the Mono River are offered, typically lasting two to three hours.
🦌
What to expect
Hippos can stay underwater for long periods - count the minutes until they surface again; they often breathe only every five to ten minutes. Watch for water birds nearby, as their presence often indicates hippos.
