💡 Tips
- Observe the massive cement plants on the outskirts, which define the industrial landscape of Tabligbo.
- Use the regular shared taxis (taxis-brousse) departing from Lomé's Grand Marché for an affordable and authentic journey.
- Avoid traveling during the peak rainy season (April-June), as the unpaved roads around the mines can become very muddy.
- Visit the local central market to experience bustling rural life away from the industrial sites.
- Use simple Ewe greetings to quickly connect with the workers and market traders.
🍽 Food
The classic corn dough served with a savory leafy green sauce in small canteens near the industrial areas.
Charcoal-grilled chicken, which is very popular at evening roadside stalls in the center.
Try this traditional fermented corn beer, often served in shaded backyards.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Buy authentic Togolese black soap, often handcrafted here from cocoa and palm oil.
A great place for purchasing fresh spices and hand-woven fabrics at lower prices than in Lomé.
Look for woven mats and baskets brought in by artisans from the neighboring villages.
Find quiet under the giant baobab trees on the northeastern outskirts, a popular spot for a peaceful break.
From the hills outside the center, you can get a wide, almost surreal view over the phosphate mining areas.

Tabligbo is the industrial heart of the Maritime Region, lying about 80 kilometres northeast of Lomé in Yoto Prefecture. The town owes its economic prominence to the extensive deposits of high-grade limestone, phosphate and clay that have been mined on an industrial scale since the 1970s. The cement plant operated by WACEM (West African Cement) is one of Togo's flagship industrial facilities, employing several thousand workers and exporting clinker across the region. Despite this industrial character, Tabligbo retains a rural and traditional atmosphere: the surrounding countryside is populated mainly by Ouatchi farmers who cultivate maize, cassava and palm oil. A dedicated rail link connects Tabligbo with the port of Lomé, enabling the export of building-industry products. Culturally, the town remains an important spiritual centre for the Ouatchi, hosting regular Voodoo ceremonies that draw devotees from across southeastern Togo.
