Vogan lies roughly 50 kilometres north-east of Lomé in the heart of the Maritime Region and is the capital of Vo Prefecture. With around 35,000 inhabitants, the town is renowned for its enormous Friday market, considered one of the largest and most colourful in West Africa and drawing traders from Togo, Benin and Ghana. The market is not only a place for foodstuffs and fabrics but also for traditional medicines and ritual objects. Vogan is regarded as one of the most important centres of Voodoo worship in Togo, hosting numerous shrines and ceremonies that shape the spiritual life of the Ouatchi-Ewe. Agriculture in the surrounding district is dominated by cassava, maize, palm oil and coconut cultivation. The Vogan area also features numerous traditional mud-brick dwellings and intricately woven granaries that bear witness to the rich material culture of the Ewe people.
