Historic District of Aného
The historical district of Aného, the former capital of Togo, is a profound testament to the country's multifaceted history. Founded in the 17th century by the Guin people, the town flourished as a major trade center due to its location between the lagoon and the Atlantic Ocean. From 1887 to 1897, Aného served as the first capital of German Togoland before the administrative center was moved to Lomé. The district is characterized by a unique blend of Afro-Brazilian architecture, brought back by freed slaves, and German colonial buildings. Its streets are lined with old villas, colonial offices, and traditional shrines that reflect centuries of cultural exchange. Aného remains the spiritual heart of the Guin community, hosting the significant annual Ekpe-Ekpe festival. This historical zone is a priority for preservation, offering insights into the early urbanization of West Africa and the complex social dynamics of the colonial and post-colonial eras.
