Kévé sits about 50 kilometres north-west of Lomé in the Maritime Region, close to the Ghanaian border, in Avé Prefecture. The town stands on a slightly elevated plateau and is surrounded by extensive cassava and yam fields whose red soil lends the region exceptional fertility. Kévé is one of the most important supply centres for Lomé's markets: every day, sacks of cassava, yams, plantains and maize are trucked from the surrounding villages to the capital. The town is also known for its traditional gari workshops, where cassava is transformed into this iconic West African staple. Culturally, Kévé is closely linked to Ewe tradition, and the annual yam festival plays a central role in community life. The proximity to Ghana also makes Kévé a busy hub for cross-border smuggling and trade, with fabrics, fuel and consumer goods constantly flowing through the area.
