Karon Ruins

The ruins of Karon, often referred to as the "Machu Picchu of Tajikistan," are a major archaeological site located in the remote Darvoz region of the Pamir Mountains. Discovered only in 2012, the ancient city is situated at a memorable altitude of approximately 2,000 meters above sea level on a strategic plateau overlooking the Panj River valley. Archaeological evidence suggests that the settlement dates back as far as the 2nd millennium BC, reaching its zenith as a significant administrative and religious center until the 10th century AD. Systematic excavations have uncovered impressive structures, including a grand palace complex, an ancient amphitheater, fire temples, and remnants of a sophisticated water supply system.
