Hama Norias (Syria)

Weather…

The Norias of Hama are colossal wooden water wheels situated along the Orontes River, serving as the definitive symbol of this historic Syrian city. While the concept of water wheels in the region dates back to the Byzantine era, the surviving 17 wheels were mostly built or extensively renovated during the Ayyubid and Mamluk periods in the 14th century. These ingenious devices utilized the river's current to lift water into masonry aqueducts, providing a steady supply to city fountains, baths, and agricultural plots. The largest of these wheels, known as Al-Mamuniyya, has a massive diameter of 21 meters. Constructed entirely of wood and lacking metal parts, the norias produce a unique, groaning acoustic sound that has defined the atmosphere of Hama for centuries. Although modern electric pumps have rendered their practical function obsolete, the norias remain a cherished cultural landmark and a masterpiece of medieval hydraulic engineering.
