Idlib sits on a plateau in northwestern Syria on the eastern edge of the Jebel Zawiya, in a fertile agricultural region famous for its vast olive groves, figs and pistachio orchards. The city itself is mid-sized and serves mainly as an administrative and market center. The real heritage of the region lies in the surrounding "Dead Cities", a unique cluster of more than eight hundred abandoned Byzantine villages, basilicas and monasteries from the fourth to the seventh century, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011 and regarded as the best-preserved testimony of late antique Mediterranean agriculture. Nearby are the columns of Saint Simeon Stylites near Aleppo, one of the most impressive pilgrimage centers of early Christianity. The civil war has heavily affected the Idlib governorate since 2011.
