Kobanî, officially also called Ayn al-Arab, lies in northern Syria right on the Turkish border opposite the town of Suruç. The modern settlement grew in the early twentieth century along the new Baghdad Railway, whose station still survives; the Kurdish name is sometimes linked to the word for "company, community". For decades Kobanî was a predominantly Kurdish, agricultural town on the northern plateau of the Aleppo governorate, producing wheat, barley and pistachios. The city became internationally famous in 2014-2015, when Kurdish People's Protection Units fought a months-long battle against the so-called Islamic State amid ruined streets. The defense of Kobanî is widely seen as a turning point of the war. Since then it has been a symbol of the Kurdish self-administration project in northeastern Syria and the focus of intensive reconstruction.
