Mount Simeon (Syria)

Weather…

Jabal Samaan, or Mount Simeon, is a limestone massif in northwestern Syria located west of the city of Aleppo. Part of the broader Belus Massif, the region consists of a rugged plateau with an average elevation ranging between 500 and 600 meters. The mountains are world-renowned for hosting the 'Dead Cities,' a collection of approximately 700 abandoned Byzantine-era settlements that are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The range is named after Saint Simeon Stylites, a Christian ascetic who lived atop a pillar here in the 5th century; the ruins of the massive basilica built in his honor, Qal’at Sim’an, remain the most significant architectural landmark in the area. Geologically, the terrain is defined by karstification, which restricts agriculture to small fertile pockets in the valleys. Despite the barren appearance of the rocks, Jabal Samaan thrived for centuries as a major producer of olive oil and wine for the Eastern Roman Empire.
