Manbij lies in the Aleppo governorate, north of the Euphrates and close to the Turkish border, in a region of striking ethnic and religious diversity. In antiquity, Hierapolis Bambyce was a major sanctuary of the goddess Atargatis here, described by the Greek author Lucian of Samosata in his treatise On the Syrian Goddess; caravans, pilgrims and Roman legions passed through the town. In the Middle Ages it was an important base of the Hamdanids and later of the Zengids and Ayyubids. The modern city grew in the twentieth century as a regional market for an agricultural plateau producing cotton, wheat and pistachios. During the war, Manbij became a strategic node between competing zones of control, and ever since it has been a recurring stage for political and military tensions along the Turkish border.
