Afrin

The Afrin River originates in the Kartal Mountains of southern Turkey and flows southwards through northwestern Syria before ultimately joining the Orontes River. In Syria, it traverses the fertile Afrin region, which is renowned for its vast olive groves and intensive agricultural production. The river plays a pivotal role in providing irrigation water and supporting the livelihoods of local communities. The total length of the river is approximately 149 kilometers, with a significant portion of its course within Syrian territory. Historically, the river valley has been a key area for human settlement, as evidenced by numerous archaeological sites scattered along its banks. The construction of the Mai-dan-ki Dam on the Afrin River in the 1990s created Lake Afrin, which now serves both irrigation and hydroelectric purposes. Geomorphologically, the river has carved deep valleys into the limestone bedrock, resulting in a scenic landscape. Despite ecological challenges such as pollution and fluctuating water levels, the Afrin River remains the vital lifeblood for agriculture in northwestern Syria.
