Citadel of Aleppo (Syria)

Weather…

The Citadel of Aleppo is one of the oldest and largest castles in the world, dominating the skyline of the historic city of Aleppo. It stands on an artificially elevated mound whose usage dates back to the 3rd millennium BC, when it housed a temple dedicated to the storm god Hadad. The fortress's current appearance is largely the result of extensive construction during the Ayyubid period in the 12th and 13th centuries, particularly under the reign of Az-Zahir Ghazi. The citadel is characterized by its massive moat, monumental entrance gateway, and impressive throne rooms. For centuries, it served as both a royal palace and an impregnable military base. Since 1986, the citadel has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Ancient City of Aleppo. During the Syrian Civil War, the site sustained significant damage from tunnel bombs and shelling, but it has since undergone partial restoration with international support, including efforts by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.
