Aleppo, in northwestern Syria, was for centuries one of the most important commercial hubs between Mesopotamia, Anatolia and the Mediterranean. The city sits on a plateau and is dominated by its massive citadel, whose hill has served as a fortified site since the third millennium BCE, with most of the standing walls dating from the Ayyubid period. Beneath the citadel stretched the covered souk, one of the largest in the Islamic world, with kilometers of vaulted lanes lined by khans, hammams and caravanserais. The population of Aleppo has always been remarkably diverse, with Arab, Kurdish, Armenian and Assyrian communities reflected in a layered fabric of churches, mosques and madrasas. The city was the heart of Syrian textile, soap and metal production, and traditional Aleppo soap, made of olive oil and laurel, is still an internationally recognized brand. The historic city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, despite heavy damage during the recent war.
