Zeugma (Turkey)

Weather…

Zeugma was an ancient city situated on the banks of the Euphrates River in southeastern Turkey, near modern-day Nizip. It was founded around 300 BC by Seleucus I Nicator, one of Alexander the Great's generals, as a critical crossing point over the river. The name 'Zeugma' translates to 'bridge' or 'junction' in Greek, reflecting its significance as a commercial and military gateway between the West and the East. During the Roman era, Zeugma grew into a wealthy metropolis where elite citizens built grand villas adorned with world-class mosaics. A significant portion of the city was submerged in 2000 following the completion of the Birecik Dam, but not before a massive international rescue excavation. The recovered mosaics, most notably the haunting 'Gypsy Girl,' are now displayed in the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in Gaziantep, the largest of its kind in the world.
