Piz Palü (Switzerland)

Weather…

Piz Palü is a prominent mountain in the Bernina Range of the Alps, situated on the border between Switzerland and Italy. Reaching an elevation of 3,900 meters, the massif consists of three distinct summits, the western, central, and eastern peaks, which form a iconic triple-peaked silhouette. The mountain's north face is heavily glaciated, dominated by the Pers and Morteratsch glaciers, making it a premier destination for high-altitude mountaineering and ice climbing. The first successful ascent of the main summit was achieved in 1866 by Kenelm Edward Digby, guided by Peter Jenny and Alexander Flury. Geologically, the mountain is composed of crystalline rocks, primarily gneiss and granite, reflecting the complex tectonic history of the Central Alps. Its proximity to the Diavolezza cable car station makes it one of the most accessible and frequently climbed high peaks in the Grisons region. Historically and culturally, the mountain gained global fame through the 1929 silent film The White Hell of Piz Palü, which showcased its formidable terrain.

Getting there
Access is mostly from the Diavolezza mountain station, reachable by cable car from Pontresina. Alternatively, demanding paths lead up from the Morteratsch side of the massif.
📅
Best season
The summer months from July to September are well-suited for climbing the three peaks. Due to heavy glaciation, the mountain is also a classic destination for high-altitude ski tours in spring.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is high alpine, dominated by steep firn flanks and narrow ridges. Piz Palü is famous for its striking glacier backdrop and demanding ice passages on the way to its peaks.
🎒
What to bring
Full ice equipment with crampons, ice axe, and rope is absolutely essential for an ascent. A helmet and modern functional clothing for extreme temperatures are also necessary for safety.
