Papiliorama in Kerzers is a unique nature center dedicated to the conservation of tropical forests and their vast biodiversity. Originally established in 1988 in the Canton of Neuchâtel, the institution relocated to its current site in the Canton of Fribourg in 2003. The centerpiece is the eponymous tropical dome, where over 1,000 butterflies from about 60 species fly freely amidst lush tropical flora. Another major highlight is the Nocturama, a rare facility that reverses the day-night cycle, allowing visitors to observe nocturnal animals such as sloths, prehensile-tailed porcupines, and bats under artificial moonlight. The Jungle Trek exhibition provides an exact replica of a nature reserve in Belize, which is actively protected by the institution's own foundation. By combining immersive environmental education with international conservation efforts, Papiliorama serves as a vital hub for ecological awareness and research.

The butterfly domes maintain tropical conditions year-round, so any month features excellent sightings. However, spring and summer bring more floral blooms and increased butterfly activity, making these the best seasons to visit.

Butterflies are most active in the morning when the domes are cooler and humidity is high. Early afternoon may see them resting, so visiting in the late morning provides the best viewing opportunities.

Please do not touch the butterflies or any plants inside the domes. Always stay on the designated paths and avoid using flash photography to prevent disturbing the animals and their environment.
