Their origins trace back to the founding of the city by the Dukes of Zähringen in the 12th century, though most of the currently visible sections were constructed between the 13th and 15th centuries. A standout feature of the fortifications is the walkable rampart path, which provides visitors with an authentic experience of medieval military architecture and features sweeping views over Lake Murten. Historically, the walls gained international significance during the Burgundian Wars in 1476, when the Swiss Confederates won a decisive victory against Charles the Bold at the Battle of Murten.
