Neu-Falkenstein Castle Ruins (Switzerland)

Weather…

The ruins of Neu-Falkenstein Castle rise on a rocky ridge above Balsthal in the Canton of Solothurn. Built in the 12th century by the Barons of Falkenstein, it was designed to control the strategically important mountain pass at Oberer Hauenstein. The complex is characterized by its prominent circular main tower, which is visible from afar and features sweeping views across the Thal valley. In 1402, the castle came into the possession of the city of Solothurn and subsequently served as the seat of a bailiff. During the French invasion of 1798, the castle was set on fire and destroyed by local peasants who viewed it as a symbol of the old oppressive regime. Since then, the site has remained a ruin, with preservation efforts only beginning in the 20th century. Today, it is a popular hiking destination and a significant witness to medieval territorial politics in the Jura Mountains.
