Birsfelden is a municipality in the canton of Basel-Landschaft and forms an integral part of the Basel agglomeration. Its geographical location at the confluence of the Birs and the Rhine has always shaped the development of the town. Historically, the area was long used as pasture land for the city of Basel, before the municipality became independent in 1875 through separation from Muttenz. A significant landmark is the Birsfelden Rhine Power Plant, built in the 1950s, which dominates the landscape with its architecture and bridge connection. Economically, the port of Birsfelden is of enormous importance as it is one of the most important transshipment points for fuels and other goods in Switzerland. The architecture of the municipality is characterized by dense development with many apartment buildings that emerged after the Second World War. In addition to its industrial character, Birsfelden gives an extensive forest area with the Hardwald, which serves as the green lung of the region. The connection to the city of Basel is excellent via tram line 3 and various bus connections. Cultural life is enriched by local festivals and the Birsfelden Museum, which documents the history of Rhine shipping and the community.
