Kandern, located in the far southwestern corner of Germany within the Markgräflerland region, is a place steeped in history and craftsmanship. Situated at the foot of the Hochblauen mountain, the town has been known for centuries as the "Pottery Town," thanks to rich local clay deposits that spurred the growth of numerous ceramic workshops. This craft remains central to Kandern's identity, celebrated today in the local Pottery and Regional Museum. Another major draw is the Kandertalbahn, one of Germany’s few remaining branch lines operated as a heritage railway with historic steam locomotives, connecting Kandern to Haltingen. Historically, the town was a flashpoint during the Baden Revolution of 1848, serving as the site of the pivotal Battle of Kandern where Friedrich Hecker’s revolutionary forces were defeated. The area is characterized by rolling vineyards and fruit orchards, benefiting from a mild climate that makes it first-rate for hiking and cycling. Nearby Bürgeln Castle, a Baroque masterpiece, features sweeping panoramic views over the Rhine Valley toward the Vosges mountains and the Swiss Alps, rounding out the town's cultural and natural appeal.
