Huningue is a significant border town in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, situated at the unique geographical point where France, Germany, and Switzerland meet along the Rhine. The town's identity was forged in the late 17th century when the military architect Vauban constructed a massive fortress here to guard the crossing into French territory. Although the citadel was dismantled in the 19th century, the town's layout and historical museum continue to reflect its military past. Today, Huningue is a model of cross-border integration, physically connected to Weil am Rhein (Germany) by the Three Countries Bridge, the world's longest arch bridge exclusively for pedestrians and cyclists. The Rhine river remains central to the town's life, hosting a world-class whitewater park and a busy river port. Due to its proximity to the pharmaceutical hub of Basel, Huningue has a strong industrial presence, particularly in life sciences and chemicals, while its lively public squares and parks offer a high quality of urban life for its multicultural population.
