Werdegg Castle is located in the municipality of Hittnau within the Canton of Zurich and possesses a long history dating back to the High Middle Ages. The original castle structure was likely constructed in the 13th century by the Barons of Werdegg, who served as officials for the Counts of Kyburg. The lineage was first mentioned in historical records in 1229, with the castle serving as the administrative center of their local lordship. Over the centuries, the site changed ownership multiple times, and after the medieval fortress fell into decay, it was replaced by a prestigious residential building. The current appearance is characterized by structural changes from the early modern period, though parts of the ancient foundations remain integrated into the site. The complex is a significant witness to regional noble culture in the Zurich Highlands and is currently protected as a heritage site to preserve its historical substance.

Visiting
The Werdegg castle ruins on a rocky outcrop above the Limmat are freely accessible at any time. You can explore the grounds, but the interiors are not accessible. The ruins offer insight into late medieval castle construction.

As an open-air ruin, there are no opening hours - it is accessible anytime. Visitors should nonetheless come during daylight to explore the structure safely. In winter, the path can be slippery.

Photography is allowed throughout the site without restrictions. The location above the Limmat gives impressive shots of the ruins and river valley. For the best pictures, use the late afternoon light.

A visit to the ruins takes about 15-20 minutes to walk around the grounds. Those exploring the surroundings or having a picnic can allow up to an hour. The ruins themselves are small but photogenic.

Combine the visit with a hike along the Limmat or a trip to nearby Fahr Monastery. The town of Baden with its thermal baths is just a short ride away. Zurich's Old Town is also not far.

Getting there
The ruins are reachable on foot via a hiking trail from Dietikon or Schlieren train station. The path is signposted and takes about 20 minutes through the forest. Parking at the forest edge is limited.

Insider tip
Bring binoculars to better see the details of the wall remains. Early morning the ruins are often empty and particularly atmospheric. A picnic on the rock overlooking the Limmat is a special experience.
