Bigi Pan
Bigi Pan is the largest coastal wetland in Suriname, offering a unique landscape of open water and dense mangroves. Travelers are drawn here for the extraordinary birdwatching opportunities, as the area serves as a vital feeding ground for thousands of migratory birds, including the iconic scarlet ibis and greater flamingo. Exploring the lagoons by boat provides a serene experience amidst untouched nature and wide horizons. In addition to birding, visitors can engage in traditional fishing or simply enjoy the tranquility of the water houses built on stilts. The local cuisine often features fresh catch from the lagoon, prepared with authentic Surinamese spices. Access is typically via a boat trip from the nearby town of Nieuw Nickerie. The best time to visit is during the dry season, from August to December, when bird populations are at their peak and water levels are good for navigation through the intricate mangrove channels.
