Danpaati
Danpaati is a beautiful island in the Upper Suriname River, acting as a gateway to the fascinating world of the Saramaccaner (Maroon) people. The name literally translates to 'village on the island.' Visitors here enjoy a unique mix of relaxation in comfortable lodges and deep immersion into the African-rooted culture of the descendants of escaped slaves. The villagers proudly maintain their traditions, dances, and crafts, which can be explored through organized tours to neighboring settlements. In addition to cultural encounters, Danpaati gives numerous nature experiences. Night excursions for caiman spotting, forest walks to learn about medicinal plants, and relaxing in the river's natural rapids are essential parts of any stay. The journey to get there is an adventure in itself: after several hours of driving, you board a traditional wooden canoe (korjaal) to head upriver. The best time to visit is between August and January. Gastronomically, you can savor regional specialties like peanut soup or fresh local fruits, making the stay a treat for all senses.
