Jebel Barkal (Sudan)

Weather…

Jebel Barkal is a prominent sandstone butte located on the banks of the Nile near the town of Karima in northern Sudan. Rising to a height of about 98 meters, the mountain has served as a central religious hub dedicated to the god Amun since the New Kingdom of Egypt. It was regarded as the Holy Mountain, believed to be the actual residence of the deity, making it a major site of pilgrimage. The surrounding archaeological area includes the ruins of the city of Napata, the first capital of the Kingdom of Kush, as well as numerous temples and palaces. Particularly striking are the groups of pyramids at the western base of the mountain, erected as burial sites for Meroitic kings and queens. Since 2003, Jebel Barkal has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the ruins of Napata. The site provides crucial insights into the rise of the Nubian Black Pharaohs, who once ruled over all of Egypt. Today, the mountain is not only a historical monument but also a spiritual place for the local population and a symbol of Nubian cultural heritage.
