Amun Temple of Jebel Barkal (Sudan)

Weather…

The Temple of Amun at Jebel Barkal was the religious center of the Kingdom of Kush and is considered one of the most significant structures of Nubian civilization. It is located at the foot of the distinctive flat-topped mountain Jebel Barkal, which was revered in ancient Egypt and Nubia as a holy mountain where the god Amun resided. The first temple complex was built during the New Kingdom in the 15th century BC by Pharaohs Thutmose III and Amenhotep II. Later, in the 8th century BC, Kushite kings, particularly Piye, massively expanded the facility to religiously legitimate their rule over Egypt. The temple was once over 150 meters long and featured monumental pylons, hypostyle halls, and a sanctuary deep against the rock. Today, the imposing ruins and remaining ram sculptures provide an impression of the monumental architecture of the 25th Dynasty. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Jebel Barkal, the temple is a key location for understanding the cultural integration between Egypt and Nubia.
