Shendi is a historically significant city in the River Nile State of Sudan, situated on the east bank of the Nile approximately 150 kilometers northeast of Khartoum. The city has long served as a vital commercial hub for caravan routes connecting the Nile Valley with the Red Sea coast. Its historical importance is deeply tied to the ancient Kingdom of Kush, with the world-famous Pyramids of Meroë located just 40 kilometers north of the urban center. During the 19th century, Shendi was a prominent trading post and a center of resistance against Ottoman-Egyptian expansion. Today, the city remains an essential agricultural marketplace, dealing in crops such as onions, beans, and citrus fruits grown in the fertile Nile silt. The establishment of the University of Shendi in 1994 has further enhanced its role as a regional center for education and culture, supporting a growing population and modern infrastructure. Its position on the railway line between Khartoum and Wadi Halfa ensures its continued relevance in national logistics.
