Pyramids of Meroe (Sudan)

Weather…

The Pyramids of Meroe are the most striking remnants of the ancient Kingdom of Kush and are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in the desert about 200 kilometers northeast of Khartoum, they served as the royal necropolis for the rulers of Meroe between 300 BC and 300 AD. There are over 200 pyramids in total, characterized by their steep angles and smaller scale compared to the Egyptian pyramids of Giza. Notably, the burial chambers are not housed within the structures but are carved deep into the bedrock beneath them. In the 19th century, many pyramids suffered significant damage at the hands of Italian treasure hunter Giuseppe Ferlini, who dismantled their tops in search of gold. Despite this, the offering chapels attached to the eastern sides of many pyramids still feature exquisite reliefs depicting the lives and funerary rites of Kushite kings and queens.
