El Kurru (Sudan)

Weather…

El-Kurru is one of the most significant royal burial sites of the ancient Kingdom of Kush, situated on the right bank of the Nile. The necropolis served as the final resting place for the rulers of the Egyptian 25th Dynasty, the so-called Nubian Pharaohs. Located here are the tombs of kings such as Piye, the conqueror of Egypt, as well as Shabaka and Tanutamun. The site marks the transition from traditional Nubian tumulus graves to the characteristic Kushite pyramids, which were inspired by Egyptian architecture. Especially spectacular are the underground burial chambers of King Tanutamun and his mother Qalhata, which are entirely painted with vivid and detailed hieroglyphics as well as religious scenes. El-Kurru was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2003 as part of the Napata archaeological sites, providing deep insights into the cultural symbiosis between Nubia and ancient Egypt during the 8th and 7th centuries BC.
