Merowe is a town in the Northern State of Sudan, situated on the left bank of the Nile, directly opposite the town of Karima. It is often distinguished from the ancient city of Meroë, which lies further south near Shendi. In recent decades, Merowe has become internationally known for the Merowe Dam, located at the Nile's fourth cataract. This massive hydroelectric project is one of the largest in Africa, significantly boosting Sudan's power grid and enabling extensive irrigation schemes. The town itself functions as a key administrative and commercial center for the district, supported by a modern international airport that serves the northern region. Historically, Merowe is surrounded by important archaeological sites from the Napatan era, emphasizing its long-standing cultural importance. Local life revolves around the Nile, with agriculture and fishing remaining traditional mainstays alongside newer industrial developments. Merowe serves as a bridge between the ancient history of the Nile Valley and the modern economic ambitions of northern Sudan.
