Sacred City of Anuradhapura (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Anuradhapura served as the epicenter of Sri Lankan civilization for over 1,300 years and is recognized as one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. Established as the capital in the 4th century BC, it flourished as a major religious and political hub following the introduction of Buddhism. The city is renowned for its colossal dagobas (stupas), such as Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanarama; the latter was once among the tallest structures in the ancient world. A focal point of pilgrimage is the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, a sapling of the historical Bodhi tree under which Buddha attained enlightenment, planted in the 3rd century BC. Anuradhapura's success was underpinned by a sophisticated hydraulic civilization featuring massive man-made reservoirs. The city was finally abandoned in 993 AD following South Indian invasions. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, it remains a sacred destination for millions of Buddhists globally.

📋 Practical info

🚪
Visiting
The archaeological complex is an expansive open-air site where visitors can explore massive brick stupas, ancient pools, and ruined temple foundations. While the site is mostly outdoors, respectful attire covering shoulders and knees is mandatory when approaching the active shrines and the sacred Bodhi tree.
🕒
Typical hours
The main archaeological zones are generally accessible from sunrise to sunset, providing ample daylight for extensive exploration. The active religious areas, particularly around the Sri Maha Bodhi, often remain open later into the evening for worshippers and pilgrims to make offerings.
📷
Photography
Taking photos of the magnificent ruins and grand stupas is widely permitted, but visitors must never pose with their backs facing Buddha statues. Drones are strictly prohibited across the sacred areas, and it is polite to ask for permission before photographing local monks or pilgrims at prayer.
⏱️
Time needed
Due to the immense scale of the ancient city, you will need at least a full day to properly appreciate the major stupas, monasteries, and museums. Many travelers prefer to spread their visit over two days, renting bicycles to navigate the shaded paths at a leisurely pace.
Combine with
A trip here is perfectly combined with a visit to Mihintale, the nearby mountain peak considered the birthplace of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It also serves as an excellent starting point for exploring the wider Cultural Triangle, including the ancient ruins of Polonnaruwa and the cave temples of Dambulla.
🧭
Getting there
The most practical way to explore the sprawling site is by renting a bicycle or hiring a local tuk-tuk driver for the entire day. The modern town of Anuradhapura is well-connected by regular trains and buses from Colombo, making it a straightforward destination to reach on public transport.
💡
Insider tip
Start your explorations as early as possible in the morning to avoid the intense midday heat and the largest tourist crowds. Make sure to wear thick socks, as you will need to remove your shoes frequently when entering the sacred stupa terraces, and the sun-baked stones can become painfully hot.
