Mihintale is revered as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, holding immense spiritual and historical significance. It was on this mountain peak in 247 BC that a historic meeting took place between the Buddhist monk Mahinda, son of the Indian Emperor Ashoka, and the Sinhalese King Devanampiya Tissa. This encounter led to the king's conversion and the subsequent formal establishment of Buddhism on the island. The extensive complex includes several key monuments, such as the Ambasthala Stupa, built on the spot where the sermon took place, and the massive Maha Stupa crowning the summit. To reach the various shrines, visitors must ascend a grand stone staircase consisting of 1,840 granite steps. Beyond its religious role, Mihintale was also home to one of the world's earliest hospitals, the ruins of which are still visible at the mountain's base. Every June, during the Poson Poya festival, thousands of pilgrims flock to the site to commemorate the arrival of Buddhism, transforming the sacred hill into a sea of light and devotion.

Visiting
Mihintale is a mountain peak in Sri Lanka believed to be the birthplace of Buddhism on the island. The entire site with temples and stupas is open to visitors and can be climbed.
Typical hours
The site is typically open from morning until late afternoon. Early morning is the best time to visit to avoid heat and crowds.
Photography
The view from the summit over the surrounding landscape is striking and good for panoramic shots. The ancient stupas and the large white Buddha are also worthwhile subjects.
Time needed
The climb on foot and visit to the main monuments take about one and a half to two hours. Those wanting more time for meditation or a picnic should allow three hours.

Mihintale is about 12 km east of Anuradhapura and combines perfectly with a visit to the ancient city. The nearby Dambulla cave temples also warrant a day trip.
Getting there
Mihintale is reachable by car or tuk-tuk from Anuradhapura in about 20 minutes. Public buses also run regularly to the site.
Insider tip
Wear comfortable hiking shoes and bring plenty of water as the climb involves many steps. A hat is essential due to the strong sun.
