Kilinochchi serves as the administrative center of the Kilinochchi District in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. Historically, the town gained international recognition as the administrative headquarters of the LTTE until January 2009, when it was reclaimed by the Sri Lankan military. Since the end of the civil war, the region has undergone significant infrastructure redevelopment, particularly along the A9 highway which connects Jaffna to the south. The economy of the area is heavily dependent on agriculture, particularly paddy cultivation, supported by the massive Iranamadu Tank, one of the largest reservoirs in the country. Geographically, Kilinochchi is situated in a flat, arid plain characteristic of the northern dry zone, with temperatures frequently exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The town also functions as a vital transport hub for the northern peninsula, facilitating trade and movement between the Vanni region and the rest of the island. Modern Kilinochchi features several government buildings, schools, and hospitals that have been rebuilt to serve the growing local population.
