Ruwanwelisaya (Sri Lanka)

Weather…

Ruwanwelisaya is one of the most sacred Buddhist stupas in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, serving as a monumental tribute to early Sinhalese civilization. It was commissioned around 140 BC by King Dutugemunu, who is revered as one of the island's most heroic monarchs for unifying the country under a single rule. Standing at an original height of approximately 103 meters (338 feet) with a circumference of nearly 290 meters (951 feet), it was one of the tallest structures in the ancient world, rivaling the pyramids of Egypt. The stupa is famously surrounded by a 'Elephant Wall,' featuring 344 carved elephant figures that symbolically support the structure's weight. It is believed to house a large portion of Buddha's relics, making it a premier pilgrimage site for Buddhists worldwide for over two millennia. After centuries of neglect and foreign invasions from South India, the stupa underwent a major restoration in the early 20th century. Today, it is a protected UNESCO World Heritage site and a bustling center for religious ceremonies, representing the zenith of ancient Sri Lankan engineering and spiritual devotion.
