Construction of the statue began in 1972 and was completed in 1993 under the guidance of the Sri Maha Bodhi Vihara monastery. Due to its elevated position on the hill, the pristine white figure is visible from almost every part of the Kandy city center. Visitors can climb a flight of stairs behind the statue to reach a viewing platform that provides a wide panoramic view of the city, Kandy Lake, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. The Bahirawakanda Buddha Statue sits on a hill in Kandy and can be viewed from outside at any time. The temple complex at the foot of the statue is open to visitors, and access to the platform directly under the statue is usually possible for a small donation.
