Kitulgala

Kitulgala is a small, easy on the eye town in western Sri Lanka that serves as the nation's premier destination for adventure sports. Bisected by the Kelani River, it gives world-class white-water rafting through lush rainforest scenery. The river's rapids are exciting yet safe enough for beginners, making it a hit for both thrill-seekers and families. Surrounded by rugged mountains and dense forest, the area provides a well-suited backdrop for outdoor activities. Cinematically, Kitulgala is famous as the filming location for the Academy Award-winning 1957 movie 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. Today, visitors can still see the spots where the bridge was constructed for the film. Beyond the river, the region is a hotspot for canyoning, jungle trekking, and birdwatching. The Makandawa Forest Reserve is home to many endemic bird species, such as the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot.
