Geumgang Pine Forest (South Korea)

Weather…

The Geumgang Pine Forest in Uljin County is one of South Korea's most significant forestry assets, spanning over 2,247 hectares in the Sogwang-ri region. The forest is famous for its Geumgang pines (Pinus densiflora for. erecta), also known as 'King Pines' due to their tall, straight trunks and high-quality timber. During the Joseon Dynasty, this area was strictly protected, and the wood was used exclusively for constructing royal palaces and coffins, as evidenced by historical Hwangjanggeumpyo boundary stones. The forest contains numerous trees over 500 years old, with the tallest reaching heights of 30 to 40 meters. The ecological significance of the area is profound, providing a sanctuary for rare plant and animal species on the eastern slopes of the Taebaek Mountains. Today, the Korea Forest Service manages the area under strict regulations to balance conservation with eco-tourism and educational opportunities.
